With a new influx of foreign workers our research showed that both locals and migrants simply didn’t understand each other as well as they could and our challenge was to provide a simple tool to bring people together for the Chamber of Commerce. A key finding from the focus groups emerged that a simple smile can go a long way - it can lead to a conversation, a friendship and a deeper understanding.
Our solution was a custom made, 4 metre long, physical smile couch to bring this idea to life. It traveled around public spaces, libraries, community centres, sports fields, schools and malls encouraging people to sit down and have a chat to someone from another culture and learn a bit about them. Hidden in recessed slots we had conversation starter cards with simple questions to prompt discussions. We worked alongside Make Collective on the project.
